How to Keep Kids Happy During a Maui Family Photo Shoot

How to Keep Kids Happy During a Maui Family Photo Shoot

A family photo session in Maui is a dream come true. You'll have the perfect backdrop for capturing unforgettable memories between the stunning beaches, lush jungles, and jaw-dropping sunsets. But, if you’re like most parents, the thought of a family photo shoot can raise one big question: How do I keep the kids entertained and happy during the session?

As a Maui family photographer, I’ve worked with countless families, and over the years, I’ve learned many tricks to make the experience as fun and stress-free as possible - especially for kids! If you’re planning a Maui family photography session and want to ensure the kids are engaged and excited, keep reading.

But fret not, I’m also here to help your kiddos find their best selves - it’s what I do best!

Here are my top tips to keep things light, fun, and picture-perfect:

  1. Make It an Adventure

Kids LOVE a good adventure, and Maui is the perfect place for it! I recommend telling your littls that they’re going on a “treasure hunt” or an “exploration mission.” Whether we’re on the beach or in the lush greenery, I’ll make sure they have a reason to stay active and engaged. You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to capture those joyful, candid moments when kids are fully in their element.

  2. Plan Plenty of Breaks

We all know that kids have a limited attention span (like…reallllly limited!). So, I always plan for short, playful breaks between shots. It’s important to let them move around, get their wiggles out, and grab a snack or sip of water if needed. The more relaxed and natural they feel, the better your Maui family pictures will turn out.

  3. Bring Fun Props

Sometimes a simple prop can work wonders! Consider bringing a few small toys or beach balls to keep your littles entertained. I typically like to incorporate some of my own props or props from Mother Nature into the session to make it more fun and interactive on my end as well, so don’t worry if you forget to bring some to our Maui family photography session. Things like bubbles, colorful scarves, beach balls, or a favorite stuffy can keep them engaged and create fun, whimsical shots.

  4. Let Kids Play

If your kiddos are feeling shy or uncooperative, it’s often best to just let them play and find their groove. I always encourage parents to let go of the pressure to get the “perfect” shot and let kids interact freely with each other, with nature, or even with their surroundings. I urge parents to not place any demands on their kids or “encourage” them to smile, look at the camera, or do this or that….it can feel overwhelming to them and then, they’ll just shut down. Relax, and trust the process - they’ll show up, I promise! Trust me, some of the best family photos in Maui come from the moments where the kids are simply playing in the sand, running through the waves, or splashing in the surf & shoreline.

  5. Keep Things Moving

No one likes to stand still for too long, especially kids! The key is to keep things moving. And trust me, we always do! We’ll do a mix of action shots, candid moments, and a few classic posed photos. This way, everyone stays engaged, and you’ll get a beautiful variety of shots to choose from in your Maui family photography collection. If you’re worried about how long the shoot will last, I always suggest booking a session that’s about 60-90 minutes. It’s long enough to get a variety of shot, but not too long to make anyone (especially the kids) lose interest.

  6. Choose the Right Time of Day

The golden hour - just after sunrise or just before sunset - is the best time for family photography in Maui, Hawaii. Not only does the soft, golden light create stunning portraits, but it also happens to be when kids are typically more relaxed. I recommend scheduling your shoot early in the morning at Sunrise or late in the afternoon to avoid the midday heat and give your littles ones a better chance of staying engaged and cheerful.

  7. Incorporate the Whole Family

One of the best ways to keep kids entertained is to get the entire family involved. Whether it’s a game of tag, a fun group pose, or a goofy family moment, involving everyone creates genuine smiles and natural interactions. When kids see their parents being silly and having fun, they’re much more likely to let their guard down and enjoy the process. Tickles help, too. 🙃

  8. Bring Snacks and Hydration

This is THE MOST ESSENTIAL TIP! Any family photographer in Maui will always recommend bringing snacks and water, especially for younger kids. A quick snack break can do wonders to reset the energy and make everyone feel comfortable. Plus, it helps keep those little smiles bright throughout the session. Believe me parents, NO ONE wants a #hangry child!

  9. Dress for Fun

A big part of the fun is choosing the right outfits. Light, comfortable clothing in soft. colors work best for Hawaii family photo outfits. Think flowy dresses, shorts, and li get shirts - nothing too stiff or uncomfortable. When kids are dressed in clothing t hat allows them to move freely, they’re more likely to have fun during the shoot, and that will show in the final photos.

  10. Go with the Flow

Finally, remember to go with the flow! As much as we plan and prepare, kids are unpredictable - and that is perfectly okay! In fact, I LOVE it! I always work with families to capture genuine moments, and sometimes the best photos come when you least expect them. So if your title one is being a bit tricky, trust that I’ll still get those magical moments that will last and last.

I hope these tips help you feel more confident about your upcoming Maui photo shoot, and more importantly, I hope they help you and your family have an unforgettable time in this tropical paradise I’m lucky to call home! I can’t wait to capture your Maui family memories!

What Time of Day is Best for Family Photos in Maui?

What Time of Day is Best for Family Photos in Maui?

When it comes to capturing the perfect family photos in Maui, timing is quite literally everything! And so is location, but that’s another story (check it out “Best Places To Do Family Photos in Maui”)!

If you’re considering a family photo session in Maui during your vacation, you might be wondering, what time of day is best for those unforgettable shots? In my personal opinion, Sunset is best, but let’s dive in a bit more below to see what works best for you and your family…

family of three sitting on fallen tree in honolua bay jungle at sunset in maui hawaii

The Golden Hour: Nature’s Magic Hour

First, let’s talk about the famous “Golden Hour” - the period shortly after sunrise and just before sunset. This is truly my favorite time to shoot! The soft, warm light during these hours adds a magical touch to your photos, making everyone (and your backdrops) look radiant. Plus, the shadows are gentle, which means no harsh lines on your faces. On the beaches and select other locations on Maui, this light creates a stunning glow that reflects beautifully off the water. Just imagine, your family laughing and playing in the surf, with the sun dipping low in the sky, casting a dreamy golden hue over the scene…

I know, right?! MAGIC ✨

It’s the kind of moment that makes for a series of breathtaking family portraits.

Early Morning: Serene and Refreshing

If you prefer a more quiet, private experience, consider an early morning/sunrise session. The beaches are often empty and there’s a tranquil vibe in the air as the Island wakes up. The soft, pastel colors of dawn can create a serene atmosphere, perfect for capturing intimate family moments. Plus, you’ll have the rest of the day to explore all that Maui has to offer and get those tan lines you’ve been dreaming about!

This also might be the best option for your kiddos if there’s a dramatic time difference between home and Maui 🙌🏼

Midday: Bright and Bold

Now, I know some may think midday could work as well - after all, it’s sunny and bright! While the sunlight can create vibrant colors in your images, it’s not always the most flattering time for family photos (or photos of any kind honestly). The harsh light can cast unflattering shadows on your faces and create squinty eyes. If you do choose this time with a Maui photographer, I recommend finding shaded areas like lush palm trees or under a tree (or in the jungle) to soften the light. For this reason, I don’t offer sessions Midday, but others might!

Believe me when I say, the golden hour is always worth the early wake-up or the patience for sunset!

Sunset: A Dreamy Finale

And then, there’s the magical sunsets here on Maui. They are truly unlike any other! I prefer to optimize the lighting 45 minutes prior to sunset, then 15 minutes after sunset to truly make the most of those soft & warm sunset hues. Sunset speaks to my overall aesthetic SO much, that’s why 99% of my sessions take place during this time…because it’s seriously magical every time! As the sun dips below the horizon, it paints the sky with a palette of pinks, oranges, and purples, adding even more colors, mood and intimacy to your Maui family photos. And who doesn’t want that?!

Ultimately, choosing the right time for your family photos in Maui depends on your family’s preferences, nap times, and schedule. Whether you opt for the peaceful pastel morning light, or the dreamy golden hour sunset period, I promise you’ll walk away with memories of a morning/evening well spent with your family on Maui! If you’re not sure which to choose, let’s chat more about your concerns and I’ll help you make the best decision for you & your loved ones (and littles of course!).

Best Places To Do Family Photos In Maui

Best Places To Do Family Photos In Maui

As a photographer, Maui is a dream. And being a Maui family photographer, my life has also become a dream! From rugged coastlines to soft, sun-drenched beaches, this island offers diverse settings for unforgettable Maui family photos. But where should you go? Here’s a breakdown of North, South, and West Maui, focusing on the photographic strengths and challenges of each region.

family of four cuddling while standing in the water along the shoreline at Baldwin beach in maui hawaii

NORTH MAUI - Untamed and Adventurous

  • The Vibe: Wild, raw, stunning - North Maui is for families who want photos that feel connected to nature, with a bit of an adventurous edge.

Benefits:

  • Lush Backdrops: North Maui is home to lush greenery, dramatic cliffside views, and the ever glorious West Maui Mountain backdrop. These untamed landscapes make for unique, vibrant backdrops.

  • Cooler Light: Because of the slightly overcast skies, especially at Sunset, and frequent cloud cover, this area provides soft, diffused light, which is great for portraits!

  • Unique Textures: The jagged cliffs and rougher shoreline add texture and depth to any photo. The colors of the greenery pop beautifully against a more neutral sky as well.

  • Less Crowds: It’s true - there are always less crowds because there aren’t any resorts here. So the beach will likely, be all yours!

Drawbacks:

  • Wind: North Maui can be windy - often more so than other parts of the island. That’s why we have so many world-class athletes who come here to play! While wind can add movement and a bit of drama & romance, it might not work for everyone, especially with young children or hair-sensitive family members.

  • Limited Beach Options: You’ll find fewer wide, sandy beaches on this part of the island. While the suggest coastlines are gorgeous, the lack of classic beach scenes might not suit every family.

SOUTH MAUI - Relaxed and Picture-Perfect

The Vibe: South Maui is all about that classic, laid-back Hawaiian vibe. It’s ideal for families looking for pristine beaches and picturesque, golden sunsets.

Benefits:

  • Consistent Weather: This area boasts some of the most predictable weather on the island. With warm temperatures and minimal wind, you won’t have to worry about unexpected rain or harsh elements.

  • Iconic Beaches: South Maui is home to some of the island’s most famous beaches. If you’re among for classic “maui beach family portrait” vibes with turquoise water, soft sand, and palm trees, this is the place.

  • Golden Hour: The sunsets here are dreamy! The western exposure creates that coveted golden-hour light, perfect for those soft, glowing family shots.

Drawbacks:

  • Popularity: Being on of the most popular areas, South Maui beaches can get crowded, especially during peak times and on weekends. If you’re shooting here, sunrise or early morning sessions may be your best bet to avoid. tourists in the background. But be sure to discuss with your photographer, as they always know where is best, and especially when ;-)

  • Less Variety: While the beaches here are gorgeous, they don’t offer as much diversity in terms of landscape. If you’re looking for a mix of beach, mountains, and lush greenery, South Maui may feel a bit one-dimensional compared to other parts of the island. Also check with your photographer on their favorite locations here - they can help you decide which might be best for more variety…

WEST MAUI - Dramatic and Dynamic

The Vibe: West Maui is vibrant and dynamic, with a bit of everything - mountains, beaches, luxury resorts, and charming towns. It’s perfect for families who want a mix of beach and dramatic landscape shots.

Benefits:

  • Diverse Landscapes: West Maui offers a blend of dramatic mountain backdrops, lava rocks, an amazing jungle, and some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. You can get a variety of shots - from soft, sandy family beach scenes to lush greenery & rugged, adventures ones with cliffs and surf.

  • Luxury Settings: This area is home to many high-end resorts, making it ideal if your family wants a more polished, upscale look. Resort gardens and manicured beaches can provide a more refined feel to your photos.

  • Epic Sunsets: Like South Maui, West Maui also gets stunning sunsets. The golden light reflects beautifully on the water, creating dreamy, ethereal images.

Drawbacks:

  • Weather Variability: While West Maui usually has lovely weather, it can be a bit more unpredictable than South Maui. The mornings are often clear, but the afternoon showers are common, especially North and closer to the mountains. Maui’s winter season also brings more rain to the Upper North West side, so discuss rescheduling policies with your photographer just in case your session is anytime between November to March.

Choosing the Right Region for your Maui Family Photos

Each region of Maui definitely has its charm, but the right spot really depends on your family’s style, the type of backdrop you’re seeking, and your willingness to adapt to natural conditions.

  • For a wild, adventurous vibe: North Maui is your go-to, with lush greenery, cliffs, and the islands natural, untamed spirit.

  • For laid-back, classic beach scenes: South Maui offers endless options with its postcard-worthy beaches and consistently beautiful weather. And those sunsets! 😍

  • For dynamic and varied landscapes: West Maui gives you the best of both worlds, with a mix of beach, mountains and jungle, you just can’t go wrong!

No matter where you have your Maui family photo session, Maui’s beauty will shine through. The key is to embrace the island’s natural elements and go with the flow - after all, that’s what makes Maui so magical!

How To Choose A Good Family Photographer in Maui

How To Choose A Good Family Photographer in Maui

Searching for a Family Photographer on Maui can be an adventure in itself - there are so many talented ones to choose from! Some use social media like Instagram and Facebook Groups and posts that include hashtags like #mauifamilyphotographer or #mauifamilyphotos to search for an aesthetic they like; some use Google and search (and search and search); but some heavily rely on the old-fashioned “word of mouth” from friends and family. Either way, it can be overwhelming to say the least! So, how do you possibly choose?

Here are some helpful tips to narrow down your choices…

Tips for choosing a great family photographer in maui

  • Look for experience photographing families. Seek out photographers who specialize in family, children, and group portraiture. Some specifically spell out their specialities on their social media or websites. Their portfolio should demonstrate expertise with posing, lighting, and capturing natural interactions.

  • Read Reviews. I cannot stress this enough! Check sites like Yelp, Google, or the photographer’s website for reviews from past clients. Look for feedback on things like professionalism, creativity, how their kids reacted, overall feeling of session, and satisfaction with the final results.

  • Consider their photography style. Different photographers have varying aesthetics - some may lean more toward classic, posed shots, while others favor a more candid, lifestyle approach. A majority of photographers on Maui like the “light and airy” beauty aesthetic, while I gravitate more toward rich & warm colors, varying textures and a session approach using a combination of posed and candid/organic shots.

  • Make sure their portfolio is consistent. It’s also extremely important to make sure their work is consistent. There are alot of upcoming photographers everywhere who are still figuring out what their “style” is and learning how to shoot/edit, so their work may not yet be consistent - and you want to make sure you’re getting what you envision when you book with them, not what they feel like doing for the day.

two parents crouching down kissing while holding their two toddler boys on the beach in front of a large black lava rock at sunset in maui hawaii
  • Meet with them beforehand. Schedule a quick phone call consult to get a feel for their personality and communication style. You want someone who makes you and your family comfortable. Make sure you connect well and feel comfortable with them.

  • Ask about their process. How responsive are they to you and your emails already? Do they seem organized? Dependable? Ask about their approach to planning the session, directing the poses, and providing guidance. A thoughtful, organized workflow is important. So is trust ;-)

  • Compare Pricing and Packages. Family photoshoots in Maui can range widely, so shop around to find the right balance of quality and value. Look at what’s included, like digital files, prints, outfit changes, # of locations, etc.

  • Get referrals from Friends & Family. Word-of-mouth recommendations from friends, family, or your hotel concierge can be very valuable when choosing a photographer in a tourist destination. Keep in mind when talking to a concierge, they may only recommend the photographer within the hotel per regulation, OR they may only recommend those photographers that pay them a percentage to market them.

Taking the time to thoroughly vet Maui family photographers will help you find the perfect match so your upcoming photography session feels more like another adventure, not a stressful burden.

Tips For Traveling to Maui With Babies & Toddlers

Tips For Traveling to Maui With Babies & Toddlers

As a seasoned traveler and Maui family photographer, I understand the unique challenges and joys that come with exploring Maui with Babies and toddlers. From capturing unforgettable family moments, to navigating the Island’s stunning (and sometimes challenging landscapes and climates), let me help guide you through some of the most helpful tips to make things a bit more easier on you…because parents, we all know how it is 🥴

Mom and dad holding their two daughters while laughing and admiring each other in wailea hawaii
  1. Plan ahead for Maui Family Photos

Before you even set foot on the Island, consider scheduling a family photoshoot with one of Maui’s best family photographers, like myself! It’s always a fun adventure, and something you’ll regret NOT doing looking back on your time here. Plus, all photographers here on Maui are invaluable resources on well…just about everything! Ask us where to eat, stay, things to do and we’ll gladly recommend activities or retreats appropriate for your family.

  2. Choose Family-Friendy Accommodations

Finding the right accommodations is KEY to an stress-free vacation. Dare I say…POOL, POOL, POOL. Look for family-friendly resorts or vacation rentals that offer amenities like kids pools, water slides, cribs, refrigerators, microwaves, high chairs and child proofing services. Many resorts in Maui also have Kids Clubs and activities to keep your little ones entertained while you relax and unwind with a nice Mai Tai or Lavaflow 🍹 Some of my personal favorites are: The Grand Wailea, The Marriott Ocean Club in Wailea, Honua Kai, The Westin Nanea, and The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa.

  3. Pack Wisely for Family Excursions & Adventures

Maui’s diverse landscapes and plethora of micro-climates offer endless opportunities for family fun. Be sure to pack essentials like sunscreen, hats, swimsuits, warm clothing, towels, a change of clothing, and plenty of snacks and water for your little adventurers (and you!). I highly recommend just keeping these things in your car at all times so you’re always prepared. Don’t forget to bring a sturdy baby carrier or stroller for exploring uneven terrain, and consider renting any bulky baby gear to lighten your load. I highly recommend Maui Vacation Equipment for all your rental needs!

  4. Embrace Nature & the Hawaiian Culture

Hawaii is special in so many ways. From the views, to the food, and especially, the culture. Embrace local culture and immerse yourself in some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Hop in your car and drive the Road to Hana and stop as much as you can….take it all in. Consider not wearing shoes too often either…feel the energy of the land as you slow down and unwind.

  5. Be Flexible and Take it Slow

Above all, remember to take it slow and enjoy every moment with your little ones in Maui. There’s a time change for everyone, so allow the patience as every adjusts, especially for nap times. Embrace the laid-back island lifestyle and don’t be afraid to adjust your plans based on your children’s needs and preferences. Whether you're spending a day building sandcastles on the beach or hiking through the lush valley of Iao State Park, cherish these precious moments together as a family.

How to Prepare for a Maui Family Photo Session With Kids

How to Prepare for a Maui Family Photo Session

You’ve officially booked your family trip to Maui, Hawaii and now, you’ve found your perfect photographer to capture your family at their absolute best, and in paradise - congratulations! Now let the fun (and preparation) begin for your Maui family pictures…

Preparing for a family photo session in Maui with kids is crucial to the success of your session. I specifically capture small families with children 10 years old and younger, making me one of Maui’s most trusted early years family photographers. Kids within this age range are always fun, open minded, don’t overthink things, and are beautifully true to themselves…but Mom & Dad are keys to their session success. So let’s dive in, shall we?

family on beach in maui hawaii with daughter on fathers shoulders being tickled by mother who is smiling up at her

Tips for preparing for a successful Maui family photo session with your kiddos:

  • Plan ahead. Discuss a location, time of day, and outfit coordination with your family (and photographer) well in advance. This will help everyone be prepared and minimize stress on the day of the shoot.

  • Choose comfortable, coordinating outfits that are true to who each of you are. Opt for solid colors or subtle patterns that. complement each other. Avoid busy prints or neon colors and clothing with logos that can be distracting.

  • Pack snacks and small toys. While the beach and ocean are typically distracting enough, bringing along their favorite besties and familiar treats & distractions can help keep little ones happy and engaged throughout our session.

  • Schedule around Nap Times if possible. The time change here in Maui can be brutal for some, but that’s why there are either Sunrise or Sunset options for sessions. While there’s typically a time change for all visitors here, work around the timeframe that works best for your kids and when they will feel well-rested and fed. I’ve found that the ocean has a magical way of waking kids up and bringing them to life even if it’s way past their normal bedtime routine. Trust the flow, and most importantly, trust your photographer.

  • Involve the kids! Let them help choose poses or fun activities they want to do during the shoot. I like to focus on the kids from the get-go and get a gauge of who they are and what they like to do for fun. Plus, their personalities tend to come out pretty quickly during my sessions, so I’ll be sure to engage them in every way possible, and hope you will, too! We want them to feel more invested and willing to cooperate and just have fun. That’s what makes beautiful images, right?

  • Bring a helper. Having an extra adult or relative to assist with keeping the kids focused and entertained can sometimes be very useful. Having them carry some of the toys, snacks and bags is always extra helpful if they’re willing ;-)

  • Be patient and flexible. Kids don’t always cooperate as planned. It’s important to go with the flow and be prepared to adapt your expectations as needed. We want to capture who your family truly is…relax!

The key is balancing preparation with flexibility to create an enjoyable, stress-free experience for both the kids and the photographer. With a little planning, you CAN capture beautiful family memories here in Maui - I promise!

mother and father embracing while their son and daughter run around them on the beach in maui hawaii at sunset

preparing Your kids mentally & emotionally for a Maui family photo shoto is also really important. here are some tips:

  • Explain the plan. Talk to your kids about when the photo session will be, where it will take place, and what they can expect. This helps manage their expectations. (Don’t worry, I send along a “What to Expect Guide” when you first book with me to help give you an idea…)

  • Emphasize the FUN! Frame the photo shoot as a fun, special activity that you’ll all do together. It’s truly another adventure! Focus on the positives like getting dressed up, playing with the photographer, and even playing in the water at the end of the session. That alllllways gets them excited ;-)

  • Encourage silly poses (and I’ll always do the same!). Kids often feel self-conscious posing formally, so I’ll do my part to encourage tickles, making funny faces, and fun, playful poses to keep them engaged and loosen up. It’s my job (and it’s the BEST watching them loosen up and be themselves!)

  • Manage their fears/concerns. If they express worries about smiling, sitting still, or anything else, validate their feelings and provide reassurance. Let them know it’s okay to feel that way and we’ll be sure to give them enough space to warm up to the session. Be sure to communicate these fears/concerns to your photographer as well so they can help!

  • Involve them in the process. Allow them to pick out outfits, choose props, or suggest ideas for poses. This gives them a sense of ownership. I also ask for their help directing Mom and Dad during the session, so they feel a sense of confidence.

  • Offer incentives. I’ll bring some special treats along, but parents, you know what they like best, so promise them a special treat or activity after the session as a reward for their cooperation. This gives them something to look forward to.

  • Stay positive yourself. If you approach it with confidence and enthusiasm, they’re most likely to feed off your energy and do the same. Mom and Dad, if you can match their energy, even better! Engage them with jokes, games or simply be animated and upbeat!

The MOST important thing is to make your Maui family photo experience feel less like a formal photo session and more like playtime…with nice clothing on 😆 With patience and an open mind, let’s help you and your family shine in your photos.

Note: And don’t worry, random breaks are always included in our sessions so kids (and parents) don’t ever feel overwhelmed or frustrated. I encourage them actually! Everyone needs time to recharge sometimes. 🙌🏼
