NORTH MAUI - Untamed and Adventurous

  • The Vibe: Wild, raw, stunning - North Maui is for families who want photos that feel connected to nature, with a bit of an adventurous edge.

Benefits:

  • Lush Backdrops: North Maui is home to lush greenery, dramatic cliffside views, and the ever glorious West Maui Mountain backdrop. These untamed landscapes make for unique, vibrant backdrops.

  • Cooler Light: Because of the slightly overcast skies, especially at Sunset, and frequent cloud cover, this area provides soft, diffused light, which is great for portraits!

  • Unique Textures: The jagged cliffs and rougher shoreline add texture and depth to any photo. The colors of the greenery pop beautifully against a more neutral sky as well.

  • Less Crowds: It’s true - there are always less crowds because there aren’t any resorts here. So the beach will likely, be all yours!

Drawbacks:

  • Wind: North Maui can be windy - often more so than other parts of the island. That’s why we have so many world-class athletes who come here to play! While wind can add movement and a bit of drama & romance, it might not work for everyone, especially with young children or hair-sensitive family members.

  • Limited Beach Options: You’ll find fewer wide, sandy beaches on this part of the island. While the suggest coastlines are gorgeous, the lack of classic beach scenes might not suit every family.

SOUTH MAUI - Relaxed and Picture-Perfect

The Vibe: South Maui is all about that classic, laid-back Hawaiian vibe. It’s ideal for families looking for pristine beaches and picturesque, golden sunsets.

Benefits:

  • Consistent Weather: This area boasts some of the most predictable weather on the island. With warm temperatures and minimal wind, you won’t have to worry about unexpected rain or harsh elements.

  • Iconic Beaches: South Maui is home to some of the island’s most famous beaches. If you’re among for classic “maui beach family portrait” vibes with turquoise water, soft sand, and palm trees, this is the place.

  • Golden Hour: The sunsets here are dreamy! The western exposure creates that coveted golden-hour light, perfect for those soft, glowing family shots.

Drawbacks:

  • Popularity: Being on of the most popular areas, South Maui beaches can get crowded, especially during peak times and on weekends. If you’re shooting here, sunrise or early morning sessions may be your best bet to avoid. tourists in the background. But be sure to discuss with your photographer, as they always know where is best, and especially when ;-)

  • Less Variety: While the beaches here are gorgeous, they don’t offer as much diversity in terms of landscape. If you’re looking for a mix of beach, mountains, and lush greenery, South Maui may feel a bit one-dimensional compared to other parts of the island. Also check with your photographer on their favorite locations here - they can help you decide which might be best for more variety…

WEST MAUI - Dramatic and Dynamic

The Vibe: West Maui is vibrant and dynamic, with a bit of everything - mountains, beaches, luxury resorts, and charming towns. It’s perfect for families who want a mix of beach and dramatic landscape shots.

Benefits:

  • Diverse Landscapes: West Maui offers a blend of dramatic mountain backdrops, lava rocks, an amazing jungle, and some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. You can get a variety of shots - from soft, sandy family beach scenes to lush greenery & rugged, adventures ones with cliffs and surf.

  • Luxury Settings: This area is home to many high-end resorts, making it ideal if your family wants a more polished, upscale look. Resort gardens and manicured beaches can provide a more refined feel to your photos.

  • Epic Sunsets: Like South Maui, West Maui also gets stunning sunsets. The golden light reflects beautifully on the water, creating dreamy, ethereal images.

Drawbacks:

  • Weather Variability: While West Maui usually has lovely weather, it can be a bit more unpredictable than South Maui. The mornings are often clear, but the afternoon showers are common, especially North and closer to the mountains. Maui’s winter season also brings more rain to the Upper North West side, so discuss rescheduling policies with your photographer just in case your session is anytime between November to March.
