What Time of Day is Best for Family Photos in Maui?

When it comes to capturing the perfect family photos in Maui, timing is quite literally everything! And so is location, but that’s another story (check it out “Best Places To Do Family Photos in Maui”)!

If you’re considering a family photo session in Maui during your vacation, you might be wondering, what time of day is best for those unforgettable shots? In my personal opinion, Sunset is best, but let’s dive in a bit more below to see what works best for you and your family…

The Golden Hour: Nature’s Magic Hour

First, let’s talk about the famous “Golden Hour” - the period shortly after sunrise and just before sunset. This is truly my favorite time to shoot! The soft, warm light during these hours adds a magical touch to your photos, making everyone (and your backdrops) look radiant. Plus, the shadows are gentle, which means no harsh lines on your faces. On the beaches and select other locations on Maui, this light creates a stunning glow that reflects beautifully off the water. Just imagine, your family laughing and playing in the surf, with the sun dipping low in the sky, casting a dreamy golden hue over the scene…

I know, right?! MAGIC ✨

It’s the kind of moment that makes for a series of breathtaking family portraits.

Early Morning: Serene and Refreshing

If you prefer a more quiet, private experience, consider an early morning/sunrise session. The beaches are often empty and there’s a tranquil vibe in the air as the Island wakes up. The soft, pastel colors of dawn can create a serene atmosphere, perfect for capturing intimate family moments. Plus, you’ll have the rest of the day to explore all that Maui has to offer and get those tan lines you’ve been dreaming about!

This also might be the best option for your kiddos if there’s a dramatic time difference between home and Maui 🙌🏼

Midday: Bright and Bold

Now, I know some may think midday could work as well - after all, it’s sunny and bright! While the sunlight can create vibrant colors in your images, it’s not always the most flattering time for family photos (or photos of any kind honestly). The harsh light can cast unflattering shadows on your faces and create squinty eyes. If you do choose this time with a Maui photographer, I recommend finding shaded areas like lush palm trees or under a tree (or in the jungle) to soften the light. For this reason, I don’t offer sessions Midday, but others might!

Believe me when I say, the golden hour is always worth the early wake-up or the patience for sunset!

Sunset: A Dreamy Finale

And then, there’s the magical sunsets here on Maui. They are truly unlike any other! I prefer to optimize the lighting 45 minutes prior to sunset, then 15 minutes after sunset to truly make the most of those soft & warm sunset hues. Sunset speaks to my overall aesthetic SO much, that’s why 99% of my sessions take place during this time…because it’s seriously magical every time! As the sun dips below the horizon, it paints the sky with a palette of pinks, oranges, and purples, adding even more colors, mood and intimacy to your Maui family photos. And who doesn’t want that?!

Ultimately, choosing the right time for your family photos in Maui depends on your family’s preferences, nap times, and schedule. Whether you opt for the peaceful pastel morning light, or the dreamy golden hour sunset period, I promise you’ll walk away with memories of a morning/evening well spent with your family on Maui!
